I went to into the old wood next to our fields to collect 'leaf duff' the fungus growing under decomposing leaves. I had learned on a course I did with Nicole Masters recently that it is a great addition for my worm bin. I collected loads to add to the farmyard manure like too. The idea is to try to make it more fungal rich and less bacteria rich to encourage more balanced diversity of microbes. I did notice in my FYM pile where I had added old wood chips the worms where there in droves. So that's going to be something I will add more of in the dung pile going forward. The aim is to make a better compost material from the FYM for spreading next year and the worm bin to be higher in fungal content for making my extract I will spray in the fields. It's perfect time of the year to collect this leaf duff, think proper name is mycelium. Anyone else working on improving the quality of their FYM or trying out worm composting?
Any other tips would be great 😊

Was thinking of investing in a chipper / mulcher. Is it OK to put cut weeds in there e.g. rushes, nettles or ragwort, will the seed be killed off in the composting process?
We started a pile with old hay, grass cuttings, flax chaff, coffee bean chaff, spent mushroom substrate. There's no manure in there. Not sure how it will do. We just covered it up and left it alone. What else should we be doing?
